Study: Gut Bacteria Linked To Biotin Production Could Cause Pattern Hair Loss

Study: Gut Bacteria Linked To Biotin Production Could Cause Pattern Hair Loss

The Cause Could Be A Bacterial Imbalance Between Microorganisms That Produce And That Consume Biotin

A recent research has linked pattern hair loss with gut bacteria, which live in the intestinal tract, and is related to biotin. Biotin is also called vitamin B7. Its deficiency is related to skin disease, hair loss, celiac disease, and can be frequent during pregnancy. On the other hand, there are gut bacteria that produce biotin, while others consume it. A study showed that the imbalance in gut microorganisms, between biotin-producing bacteria and biotin-consuming bacteria, can explain the availability of biotin for hair, skin, and nails. They caused a bacterial imbalance in mice by giving them antibiotics and found that a type of bacteria had expanded, which does not produce biotin. Further tests showed that when feeding this bacteria, hair loss worsened. This proves that hair loss can be treated with probiotics, t restore the bacterial imbalance.
